Canon

Canon emerged from Japan's industrial growth along with Nikon, Yashica, Minolta, Konica, Olympus, and other manufacturers to compete with Leica the precision optics, opto-mechanics, and later opto-electronics mostly led by Sony. It compted head to head with Nikon, and Minolta in the 35 mm market for many years. Minolta, Konica were bought by Sony to gain their market share, and recently Olympus had to shut down due to losses in the camera market in competition with the mobile phone.

Canon P was the predecessor of Canon FTb shutter design. It competed with Leica rangefinder during 1960's along with Nikon S.
