Leica 8x30

Trinovid design goes back to 1960's. Back then binoculars were still using the Porro prism design. Although that design had its advantages, it was cumbersome to carry, and was prone to misalignment if dropped. The Amici-Roof prism (below, right)solved all that by packaging the prism inside a compact subassembly, and allowed straight optical path inside binoculars. The other thing about Trinovid is its beautiful aesthetics. The use of curves in its outer form is so clever, making the the most elegant binoculars yet designed.

Compact design of Trinovid binoculars is for the Amici Roof prisms in place of Porro prism designs of prior art. Below is the patent filed by Leitz for the design on Dec 1969. The design evolved through the years to a production form that we see today. These prisms usually come as a subassembly inside the binocular rather than set of porro prisms  that were directly mounted on the diecast body.
